Wall Plastering & Decorative Finishes in Pererenan

Pererenan is where Bali’s architects build their portfolio pieces — tropical brutalism, limewash, raw textures and walls that refuse to be straight. We are the crew they call when the drawing says “seamless curved finish” and the concrete crew has left the site.

Craftsman applying textured lime plaster to a curved wall in Pererenan Bali

The architects’ end of the coast

Pererenan used to be Canggu’s quiet neighbour; now it is the postcode where Bali’s most photographed houses get built. Tropical brutalism, board-marked concrete, limewash in colours named after weather — and every one of those looks depends on the finishing crew more than on the drawing. A curved wall photographed at sunset shows every wave in the plaster, so our Pererenan work runs on sample panels: we mock the finish up at full scale, the architect approves it in the actual site light, and that panel becomes the contract standard for every wall that follows.

Architects get working answers from us, not nods: which radius needs mesh, where a movement joint can hide inside a shadow gap, how the limewash will behave through its first six months of weather. It is slower to start and much faster to finish — nobody argues about “too much texture” in week six when the answer has been bolted to the wall since week one. Panels and finished walls are in the gallery.

Limewash and mineral finishes, done properly

Half of what gets sold as limewash around here is acrylic paint with a texture additive. The real thing is mineral: it breathes, it patinas, it softens with age — and it needs the right base coat or it powders off within a year. We prepare walls with a lime-compatible skim, apply limewash in thin passes and tell you upfront which surfaces — showers, splash zones, pool edges — want a different system from the decorative plaster range instead. Curved and free-form walls get the same discipline: levelled with flexible battens, then checked under raking light at night, the only honest test of a “seamless” surface. Decorative systems start around IDR 420,000/m²; flat skim from IDR 42,000/m².

Water from below, not above

Pererenan’s villas sit inside working rice fields, and paddies are irrigated — the ground off Jalan Raya Pererenan and the lanes down to the beach stays wet for most of the year. Moisture climbs brick walls by capillary action, and on a dozen Pererenan sites we have been called to fix “paint problems” that were actually rising damp: blisters, salt crystals, a dark tide-mark a metre off the floor. The fix starts below the finish — damp-proof course checked, waterproof render on the first metre, breathable finishes above — which is why we inspect the base of every wall before quoting. A repaint over rising damp is money burned; the mechanics are in our guide to why walls crack and blister.

We cover the whole strip from the statue at Pererenan Beach up to the shortcut roads, and the neighbouring pages — Canggu, Berawa and Umalas — carry their own local notes.

FAQ

Plastering in Pererenan — FAQ

Do you do limewash and textured finishes in Pererenan?

Yes — limewash, polished and pigmented plasters, sand-textured renders and tinted skim make up most of our Pererenan work. Decorative systems start around IDR 420,000/m² depending on the finish and substrate; see decorative plaster for the options.

Can you work from an architect’s spec or reference?

That is how most Pererenan projects start. Send the reference photos or spec sheet and we produce full-scale sample panels on site — usually two or three variants. The architect signs off before we touch the walls; changes cost nothing at sample stage and a fortune after.

Do curved walls cost more to plaster?

Somewhat. Curves take more labour at the levelling stage because straightedges do not fit — expect roughly 15–25% over flat-wall rates, quoted per element from the drawings rather than as a blanket surcharge. Flat rates are on the pricing page.

How do you deal with moisture from the rice fields?

Ground damp is the hidden enemy in Pererenan. Before rendering ground-floor and garden walls we check the damp-proof course, use waterproof additives on the lowest courses and choose breathable finishes so moisture escapes instead of blistering the paint.
